Insurance & Mens' Health Week 2025
'Mens health week' is in June each year & just before fathers day. It's all about improving the awareness overall of uk men's' health, insurance or not.
It is designed to give information, services & treatment that men may need to live healthier, longer & more fulfilling lives.
- Encourage the earlier detection & treatment of health difficulties in men
- Heighten awareness of preventable mens' health issues for all ages
- Support men to engage in both healthier lifestyle choices & activities
Each year during Mens' Health Week, the NHS focuses on a different theme.
"A men's' health issue is a disease or condition unique to men, more prevalent in men, more serious among men, for which risk factors are different for men, or for which different interventions are required for men"
Often without knowing it, by the time some men reach their middle age 40s & 50s, many mens' health will have declined & so dramatically increased their chances of becoming seriously ill later into life.
Some men are binge drinking more than often they know they should do, either down the pub or at home. Or continuing smoking, despite everything we are told by the NHS.
Whether we are eating more of the wrong things, rather than a balanced diet, or too much food and more often.
Or just not being active & exercise enough, all of these smaller things can add up to one bigger thing, an unhealthier you.
But in today post Brexit Britain 2020's, after the Pandemic & Economic stresses, for some men's health it’s not always easy to make a change into our busy lives.

Men's health week points out that 'modern life' is ganging up on us men

- IT that allows us to be entertained without ever having to leave the sofa
- Remote control buttons or voice controls making us lazy
- Often tempting food treats are in easy reach at the supermarkets

The Importance of Proper Brushing & Teeth Flossing
When you brush your teeth or floss...do your gums bleed ? If so, then this is not normal. Proper teeth brushing and flossing should never cause this, as pointed out by Oral B.
Bleeding gums are a cardinal sign of gingivitis, which is a reversible form of gum disease. If allowed to persist, gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease according to Colgate, a more serious form of gum disease that may spread to the underlying bone and eventually lead to tooth loss.
Tooth Plaque is sticky, bacterial colour-less deposits constantly forming on your tooth surface. This build-up of plaque can then trap stains on the teeth. It's also the primary factor in mens' health gum problems.
Fighting plaque & tartar build-up on teeth is a life-long part of good oral care. Plaque begins forming onto teeth 4/12 hours after brushing.

Men Mental Health
Why Men's Mental Health is Important?
Western society or religious expectations & traditional male or masculine gender roles play a strong part in why some men are less likely to discuss or seek any help for their own mental health problems. It is not macho to do so.
Culturally, parents may tend to raise their sons when children differently than their daughters.
Boys are taught to be rough, tough & tumble and adventurous. The various toys bought by a parent for their child may reflect this eg; Boys Toys like toy cars, planes or guns.
Men when they grow up are then traditionally expected to be the main family financial breadwinners'. For men to be strong, to be up right, to be dominant & to be in control. This can create tremendous pressures for those who can't cope with societies judgements.
All this can make it harder for mens' health - to then reach out for help and open up, when some of or all of these expectations unravel & go wrong.
Medical research also suggests that some men who can’t speak openly about their own emotions, may be less able also to recognize any symptoms of their own mental health problems in themselves. In this instance, these men are less likely to then reach out for their own support.
Some men may also be more likely to use more harmful & dangerous coping methods such as drugs, gambling or alcohol. They are less likely to talk to family or friends about their own mental health issues.
However, according to NHS research men who need mental health help and can then access help can that meets their preferences and is easy to access, meaningful and engaging can really see benefits.
For example, Men’s Sheds provides community spaces to help men mental health to connect & chat, often over practical activities.

'Male Stress'
We all have daily stress issues but excessive 'Male Stress' can then cause ongoing men mental health problems.
In fact, the NHS advise around 1/4 Men annually will suffer some sort of mental health stress problems. They are also responsible for 50% of all long-term absences from work.
Too much 'male stress' can then lead to:
- Damaging your immune systems & heart
- Increase your chances of having serious health problems
- Reduce life expectancy
- Damage your sex life
If you are ever worried about one of your mates, stop and ask him “how’s it going?” Then stop & listen. The silence waiting maybe deafening but it will be worth it....
Ignore the usual 'okay mate' answers... instead give him the opportunity to talk to you and then kindly listen when he does. Take the time to do best mate things with him, and then make sure he knows you are there for him to talk to.

Top 10 causes 'Men Stress'?
Here are some of the common causes of 'man stress' in the 2020's. Which of them push your man stress buttons?
In no particular order...
- Work
- Unemployment
- Money Worries
- Death of a family member
- Family personal breakdowns & loneliness
- Sex & sexuality
- Partners & friend issues
- Drink, Drugs & Addictions
- Violence or abuse both real life & online
- Moving home, changing jobs, children leaving the family home
Note: These normal real life situations can cause your male stress & pressures to mount. That is not because you’re a weak man; that’s because you’re a normal man.

Men's' Health | 'Men Depression'
Symptoms of ‘men depression’ include irritability, increased loss of control, sudden anger, risk-taking & aggression.
Unlike depressive women who may seem sad or express their sadness, instead for some men depression hides their emotions and may seem to be more angry, irritable, or aggressive. Men with depression may also feel very tired and lose interest in their work, family, or hobbies.
Men may then be more likely to have difficulty sleeping than women who have depression. Sometimes men mental health symptoms appear to translate into physical issues.
For example, a racing heart, tightening chest, ongoing headaches, or digestive tummy issues can be signs of a men mental health problems.

Men Mental Health & Recovery
When it comes to 'men mental health' recovery can mean different things to different people. You might have days, weeks, or months where you feel well, okay. Then other times when your symptoms sadly return.
For some men, 'recovery' will mean no longer having any symptoms of their mental health condition. For other men, it will mean managing their usual mental health symptoms, but regaining more control of their lives. Then re-learning new ways to live the life they really want.
When it comes to your men mental health recovery, think about what’s important for you and so what a meaningful life would look like.
Recovery is often described as a process, meaning it isn’t always straightforward. If you’ve been recommended techniques or treatments that work for you, you’re likely to feel more confident & so less overwhelmed by your symptoms.

Men's' Health | Male Suicide Statistics
The Samaritans advise that sadly 'Middle-aged men from disadvantaged backgrounds are more likely to die by suicide than any other age group.'
Male suicide statistics from The World Health Organization estimated on average there are nearly 800,000 suicide deaths worldwide. Most were men.
In the UK, the male suicide statistics rate is its lowest since early 1980's at nearly 6000 people or 15.5 deaths per 100,000.
Suicidal thoughts can be confusing, frightening, over whelming & complicated, according to Mental Health Foundation.
These thoughts can range from having just general thoughts about not wanting to be here on earth, to making plans about how & when you could end your life. You might feel less like you want to die, and more that you want that pain to stop.
You might feel:
- desperate
- hopeless or trapped
- wish to avoid other people
- tearful, anxious or overwhelmed by strong negative thoughts
- tempted to do risky or reckless things ....because you don’t care what happens to you
Sadly suicide is still the single biggest killer of men under age 45.
In Conclusion here:
Many men are much more likely to see their doctor about their physical symptoms ....than their emotional symptoms.
If this is you reading this article, then please kindly talk to someone about your problems and please seek help. "A problem shared is a problem halved"

Men's Health | Men & Relationships
'Men's Health' & Relationships
Men & Relationships can be more complicated but especially with women.
This is often because men & women often may have a difficult time understanding each other re their fundamental psychological differences ie; Men are from Mars & Women are from Venus?
There are several issues that men may come across when dealing with any relationships. Although some men are more inclined to ignore issues that arise in their relationships & for example just go down the pub and try to ignore it.
However, it is important to make an effort to deal with these relationship issues head on, for most men's' mental health month on month. Avoidance via the Ostrich Effect is never the answer.
Maybe, the key to any successful relationship is to continually work at it. That rule perhaps applies whether it is any relationship either as a friend or as a partner.

Life Insurance | Income Protection | Critical Illness
Men's Health | How much does Mens' Life Insurance cost?
This is a good question, and one we are asked as Life Insurance Brokers.
With rising household bills & outgoings and pressed monthly family budgets in the Post Pandemic 2020's, people are naturally looking to save money where they can. This is understandable.
'Men's Life Insurance' Quotes may start from £5pm from Leading UK Insurers. However, we will go onto touch how getting any cheap life insurance for man, maybe costly in the long run.
But let's turn the question around and ask instead...
Is Life Insurance more Expensive for Males?
From 2012, eu gender neutral rates applied across the insurance industry ie; the price was now the same for males & females.
This meant the general question is life insurance more expensive for males became less important against your overall mens health and lifestyle.
So life insurance for male over 60 cost for example initially was now the same as life insurance for female over 60, before full medical underwriting.
How much 'Mens' Life Insurance' Cover do you need?
Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis on Life Insurance, his advice is for a good rule of thumb use the....
'THE 10 x RULE'
Martin Lewis Best Life Insurance formula is to aim to cover '10 x the Annual Income' of the highest earner or main breadwinner until any kids have finished full-time education.
Using that principle, if you earned £37,000pa gross, Martin says you should maybe consider insuring yourself (after any mortgage, loans & debts are repaid) for £370,000 life insurance (ie; 10 x the annual gross income).
Interestingly, he simply recommends insuring your gross income of £37,000pa - but not bother with net after tax income in this Martin Lewis 10 x rule life insurance for man example.
Following on from this simple Martin Lewis example formula above, if you then worked for the next 27 years until retirement, you could potentially earn over £1 million gross ie; £37,000pa x 27 years = £1 million [or more with ny future inflation wage rises].
As such, unlike the 10 x £37,000 gross salary life insurance example - you could instead protect your family with either;
- Income = £3,083pm or £37,000pa family income benefit lifecover policy
- Lump sum = £1 million level term life insurance policy [if invested @3.7% = £37,000pa]
- Or a mixture of the 2 policy types over the next 27 years - all dependant on your family circumstances.
Neither takes into account repaying any mortgages, loans or debts.
- You can decide wether you want the cover to be level or inflation linked
- Single plan | 2 x seperate plans | Joint life insurance 1'st claim | Lump Sums or Family Income Benefits options
Apart from losing a loved one, this real hidden income threat is what could be lost if the main breadwinner died prematurely.

So, as Financial Advisers we are not saying this 'Martin Lewis formula' 10 x annual salary is therefore a 100% one size fits all ie; not applicable for everyone's own personal situation.
You may also feel this is either not enough cover, or perhaps too much for your own circumstances if you already have say company death in service cover & if on a budget for life insurance?
So, I would re-summarize the Martin Lewis formula for mens life insurance''...
That is to ideally 'Protect 3 Things'...
- LUMP SUM > Repay any mortgage & debts, cover funeral costs
- INCOME > Help cover all your monthly bills
- LUMP SUM > Back up for holidays, education, emergencies
This basic formula is naturally dependant on wether you are cohabiting or married, have young or older dependants, retired or both working still. Have sufficient backup already in your investments & savings.
Ultimately, enough life insurance is also down to your affordability. This calculation could also be made harder due to any pre-existing men's health or lifestyle issues, meaning possibly higher ‘rated insurance premium’ costs. Contact us for personalized advice.

Types of Mens Life Insurance | Income Protection | Critical Illness
There are 2 main types of UK Life Insurance for Men:
1] Term Insurances >
Term Life Insurance for men is a simple plan that pays out a cash sum if you die during the fixed time period your policy runs for.
The sum paid out on death stays level for family life cover or decreasing for mortgage protection. The premiums remain level whether you are near the policy beginning or end.
Most plans also include free 'terminal illness' cover. You can choose options of a lump sum or family income benefit & also if you want your cover to be inflation proofed.
The longer the level term insurance runs, then the more expensive it costs ie; 50 years term maybe double or more the cost than 25 years, as the insurance risks are higher as you get older. You can take a term insurance plan upto age 90.
2] Whole of Life Insurance >
Whole of Life Insurance policy, always pays out if you die ie; whenever (as long as you’re kept up with monthly payments).
For those on a restricted budget, this maybe the most expensive policy compared to term insurance, as it will always payout.
Note: Over 50's Lifecover asks no medical questions, so could always be a choice if you have some poor men's' health issues.
Consider placing the policy into trust to help avoid probate or Inheritance Tax IHT issues.
3] Income Protection >
Income Protection also known as Permanent Health Insurance is an insurance policy that provides a 'tax free income'.
It pays out if you are unable to work through accident, illness or injury to help cover your regular bills & outgoings. It may cover you until retirement per claim - or a budget sickness policy for upto 1 or 2 years per claim.
If you are self employed or have some employer short term sickpay then this policy is your - Bills Insurance or Wages Insurance back up plan.
4] Critical Illness >
Critical illness is an an insurance policy that provides a 'tax free sum' to help to protect you & your family against the financial impact serious illness can have on your weekly or monthly finances.
Loss of your income or even your business through anyone suffering a longer term critical illness, is unfortunately more than likely. Plus the regular visits to the hospital. Then the closer impact on your mens' health could have on your partner, your family, your dependants or your friends.
This impact maybe physically ie; if your partner may have to help lift you. Then psychologically, with the everyday stresses & strains to helping care for ...you perhaps 24/7.
The taking time off to perhaps help you out & any knock on financially. The ripple effect sadly of those suffering any critical illness, are oft forgotten.

Mens' Health '8 Life Insurance Man Need to Knows'
1] Low start policies, Health Assessed plans & Guaranteed
A comparison or direct website shows a cheap insurance premium & you see the word ‘guaranteed’ noted by all premiums.
Some Insurers offer these Lower start policies where it says their premiums are ‘guaranteed’ - but the only thing that’s guaranteed is that the reviewable price may go up annually or regularly in line with an Insurers guaranteed age-based formula. This could work out the most expensive life policy in the end.
There are also some Insurers like Vitality Life, that offer 'healthy living' assessed plans through regular exercise & mens' health reviews. These reward you if you maintain a regular healthy lifestyle.
However, although this is naturally a good thing, your premiums could go up as well as down ie; if you don’t regularly engage with their Healthy Living programme or are unable to, your monthly premiums may then increase.
Fixed premiums are ideally the way to go only if you prefer to operate on a fixed budget or don't want to be regularly re-assessed?
TIP: You may assume all life policies quoted as guaranteed are all the same? Wrong.
2] Waiver of Premium
This extra cost benefit helps cover or 'waive' your policy premiums if your income is threatened through hospitalisation, accident or illness due to say cancer, heart disease or stroke. In this instance, the Insurers help pay your premiums in your recovery to ensure the policy is not cancelled & your valuable insurance cover terms remains. On some Insurers plans, waiver of premium is inclusive rather than paid for. This often ignored feature could be a game changer?
TIP: On some cheap life insurance plans, waiver of premium is either not available or only after a 6 months wait. This is a long time waiting, if you have a reduced income.
3] Critical Illness v Terminal Illness Insurance
Terminal Illness means 'incurable' re life insurance policy terms & so is terminal illness often included for free ie; have less than 12 months to live.
Critical Illness is a policy that pays out on survival of diagnosis of specified serious illness.
Sounds simple? However, we get some men who are perhaps looking to save money on their existing life policy, as their premiums sound expensive against what their mates advise they pay.
Their policy includes critical illness which sounds like the same as terminal illness? They look online & see much cheaper premiums for a life insurance policy with FREE terminal illness, which they think must be the same thing.
So they go ahead and cancel their old critical illness plan. Only upon being diagnosed with a cancer, heart attack, MS or stroke do they then sadly find out the old critical illness plan may then have actually paid out.
Unfortunately as brokers we say people often can misunderstand insurers jargon terminology. You or me may have a 1/3 chance of making a critical illness claim in your life. This can be very expensive at your worst time.
TIP: To include lifecover and critical illness benefit onto your policy is on average 4 x the price of life insurance for men....as the likelihood of payout is higher. Terminal illness is usually included for free.

4] Mens' Health Disclosure
As life insurance brokers we are sometimes asked....How will the Insurers even know if I just quit smoking that odd cigarette a week or now occasionally vape, when their 'smoker rate premiums' are so much more expensive - if I tell them I don't?
What happens if I didn't tell the Insurer about having any familial disease, what ever that means?
'Mental Health Life Insurance'
It is important you also advise Insurers about your current or past state of mental health. Don't assume if any you have had problems re mental health life insurance company - how would they even know?
Naturally, if you are like many men, you just get on with it anyway. You 'man up'...so you don't usually bother seeing your doctor about what you may deem as non-physical but mental health issues. This is when problems may arise, especially re 'mental health life insurance' cover.
The Insurer may not necessarily request any medical men's' health tests or write to your GP upfront, to query your underwritten insurance application when you apply. However, they will probably do so if a claim comes in, to fully assess the validity of your situation.
When buying any type of insurance, it is always based upon your honest disclosure at the time
Note; The Insurers should always send you a copy insurance application of what you initially disclosed, for you to then carefully recheck. If you think anything is wrong, then you need to advise them asap.
The original death certificate once requested by the Insurers may then highlight that it was caused likely by 'smoking related factors.' Alternatively, it may point to the fact that a heart attack from someone at such an early age in their 40's was likely due to their 'hereditary health history' issue of familial heart disease.
The last thing your family would ever want, at their worst moments, is to have to be told by the Insurer the your death claim is now sadly invalid. That the information you gave at the time was found inaccurate ie; misrepresentation.
Remember Guys, if you are paying say £35pm to 'correctly insure' or £25pm 'maybe incorrectly' for say £370,000 life insurance, then who has the GREATER RISK ?
The Insurance Company who may have to pay out a large death claim .....or your Family because they unfortunately didn't !!!
5] Insurance Misrepresentation
The Financial Services Ombudsman (FSO) can if requested look into a misrepresentation claim.
The FSO will check if an Insurers questions were fair & accurate eg; Have you smoked or used any type of cigarettes or tobacco products, nicotine replacements or vaped, wether or not these contains nicotine, in last 12 months ? Yes/No.
Would the Insurers have acted differently if given accurate information at the time of application and been fair in the way they handled any misrepresentation re any non disclosure.
TIP: The simple answer for is Guys' tell the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth... otherwise the insurance may not payout !
6] Joint Life Cover or Single Life?
- A joint life 1'st death insurance policy may pay out on the death or claim on that 1'st policyholder. Then it ends.
- Single life cover however is setup on the sole life & death of a policyholder
- Joint life assurance 2'nd death pays on last death eg; This may usually be used for Inheritance tax cover
- Insurers may setup a joint life plan to repay a joint mortgage
- Family life Insurance cover may be setup either joint life 1'st death or 2 x single policies or 'dual life'
TIP: 2 x single or separate life insurance's are often more costly, BUT they may payout twice

7] What does putting a Policy into Trust mean?
- Putting a mens' life insurance policy into 'trust' may help to avoid probate delays & Inheritance Tax IHT - by falling outside your estate.
- It Ensures it should go direct to you nominated beneficiaries via the nominated trustees
- This mens life insurance trust set up applies even if you have made a valid will
- Without a trust the life cover policy could fall back into your estate
- Inheritance tax is currently 40%. So it could be for larger estates, the life insurance payout is then reduced by this amount.
- Most Insurers do supply free a good range of generic life insurance trusts, ideal for many client situations
TIP: Insurers can offer free generic protection trusts. If in doubt, we suggest you seek legal advice
8] 'Mens' health' changes after taking the policy out?
Any men's' health or lifestyle changes since, usually does not void your existing cover...if it wasn't relevant at that time of initial application.
It maybe the Insurers request GP reports when you originally apply, to check any health details disclosed. Likewise they may not.
So take care to doubly re-check on your insurance application what you initially disclosed to the Insurers, as this information then stands now and in the future. Please check your original T&C's.
'Mens' Health' & Life Insurance for Man Conclusion
In conclusion, Men's' Health both mental & physical is important and undervalued....It should be discussed.
However, discussing with your bloke mates re life insurance matters, please note what is best for one man, isn’t always the best for another. It could be unsuitable to your individual case circumstances or budgets'.
Or if you have 'mens' health' issues, your age, your job or pastimes are all considered different underwriting risks for each Insurer, so they may all cost this up differently.
Also, the cheapest insurance policy quote isn’t necessarily the best, as it may have the lowest cover or have age costed annually reviewed increasing premiums.
Neither is the most expensive necessarily, as it may just be poorer value for money.
Lastly, ignore those advertised Life Insurance with Free Gifts deals, as these often could be £1,000's more lifetime expensive.
